Celebrating 50
glorious years.....
St.
Martin’s Diocesan School celebrates a milestone of glorious
achievement as we march forward in our journey of imparting
excellence in education. Under the aegis of the Diocese of Delhi, Church of North
India, the school is situated in the lush green Delhi Cantonment, as
the only co-educational Christian School in the vicinity and
the serenity of the surroundings offer a pleasing sight to all
who happen to step in.
The Diocese
of Delhi, Church of North India, takes pride in its
institutions in the Capital, the most prestigious one being the
St. Stephen’s College. St. Thomas School, Mandir Marg, Queen
Mary’s Schools, Victoria School, are a few of the sister
concerns as all these institutions are chaired by the Bishop of
the Diocese of Delhi, CNI, The Rt. Revd. Sunil Kumar Singh.
The English
Medium Co-educational Senior Secondary School was founded way
back in 1960 when the eminent British Educationist
Missionary, Ms. Helen Jerwood, with much prayers and
dedication, lit the spark of the Institution inside the St.
Martin’s Church. The School began with a Nursery section and
Classes 1 – 3 within the magnificent church whose inside
resembles a basilica. Every Martiner who enters the school in
his formative years is moulded within these walls as the nursery
section still continues to be inside the Church.
The spirited
Founder-Principal bicycled to the near vicinity to spread word
of the new school. Ms. Helen Jerwood braved all odds to pursue
this realization of her vision. The initial difficulties mounted
to steep heights as days went by; yet Ms. Jerwood worked with
a passion to revive her school. She took upon herself the mantle
and responsibility of taking the school forward.
Unfortunately, in 1965, the glow Ms. Jerwood kindled by her
ardent dedication to the School she started, had an unfortunate
setback as she was untimely called to God’s glory.
Ms.
Jerwood’s undying spirit reminds us of these words by Thomas
Edison. ‘We haven’t failed. We now know a thousand things that
won’t work, so we are much closer to finding what will.’
True to the
Motto of the School, Light begets Light, the spark she
kindled with much prayers was carried on by the Martiners far
and wide as years went by.
Many an
eventful year stepped by and the school braved all odds in
steadily moving on ahead, facing and responding to the
challenges that gripped the School.
The School
expanded by and by and was upgraded to a full fledged Senior
Secondary School in the year 1991. Since April 2005, its rise
has been exponential, ever since its reins had been handed over
to a dynamic young Principal, Mr. A. D. Lyall who has brought
with him the wealth of experiences from reputed institutions
including Woodstock International School, Mussoorie.
The next
four years saw a remarkable phase in the growth of the
Institution as the School leapt forward towards financial
stability and showed a spurt in its academic and overall growth.
The School
takes pride in its learned faculty who instill in their young
students feelings of self sufficiency and train them to take up
the challenges of life.
The pursuit
for academic excellence has not left behind the excellence in
sports and co-curricular activities and the Martiners shine
bright at various spheres as they bring home appreciations and
merit awards in inter school events. The School Band has
consistently given remarkable performances which have captivated
many an audience. The songs rendered by the School Choir on
numerous occasions have a pulsating effect and they vibrate in
the memory of all who happen to listen to them.
Our
Martiners have reached the farthest ends of the world; we have
our ex-student as a scientist at NASA; as Doctors at the best
hospitals of the Capital; as engineers, academicians, defense
officers and many others in diverse professions who bear a
silent witness to the blessings they received from this modest
institution in the heart of the Capital.
